Patug's Journey

Overview

Patug’s Journey is a short animated film about a bunny who is neglected by his owner after losing his stuffing. In an attempt to win back his owner’s affection, he fills himself with various trinkets to return to his original round form. I was responsible for the concept and storyboard drawings, character creation, and animating his return home.

Overview

Concept illustrations depict Patug’s movement and depth, focusing on a cute, elastic bunny whose body can change form. The facial expressions draw inspiration from Sumikko Gurashi plushies, while the animation emphasizes subtle emotional changes to enhance storytelling through nonverbal communication.

storyboard

For the storyboard, I was responsible for the illustrations, while my teammates handled the voice-over and script, with our aim being to highlight the various shots and keyframes curated at different moments in the film.

Character design

A key part of creating Patug was developing facial blend shapes, allowing a wide range of expressions through adjustable weights and drivers. This streamlined the animation process, letting me focus on movement in the skeleton while using blend shapes for expressions, ultimately enhancing Patug’s emotional range and performance.

outcome

In this project, I developed a strong understanding of storytelling, character design, and the principles of animation. The use of blend shapes enabled a wider range of expressions for Patug throughout the final animation, while also deepening my knowledge of the software and strengthening my polygon modeling skills within a 3D environment.
