Overview
What if there’s a world where we could regulate AI? Blackboxing is a project where in a team of five, we set out to speculate a world where we can reveal the inner workings of hidden AI systems leaving only inputs and outputs. We framed our question on the blind trust we put into these systems with hidden accountability and question our values. For this project, I was in charge of the visual branding and partaking in the composition of the packaging design.

Packaging Iterations
Through our earlier iterations, we wanted to emphasize the branding and what the product might look like, so we showcased the pill USB on the front. However, after revisions and feedback, we recognized it needed to more clearly surface the product’s service. This shift helped spark conversation about the packaging’s purpose while still maintaining a sense of ambiguity in the copywriting. The branding colors and logo were also further refined to better align with Midjourney and OpenAI.

Target Demographic
In our research, we narrowed down the key audience categories our product targets, which helped us focus our packaging copy. For example, the ChatGPT-branded box was tailored for students, allowing us to explore how the product could better serve their needs.

OUTCOME
The outcome of this project sparked conversation around the regulation and ethics of AI product and the secondary and tertiary consequences of its acceptance by society. It also raised awareness of my role as a designer and how easily trust in these self automated technologies within our society.
